The road begins in Budapest, on a clear summer afternoon, at the neo-Gothic Parliament, completed in the early 20th century. Toward evening the route crosses Budapest, through eastern Pest. After dark it climbs Castle Hill, to Fisherman's Bastion, built between 1895 and 1902, and Matthias Church. The Danube banks and the Castle District are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From Budapest the route crosses into Austria, to Admont in the Enns valley. In the evening the river runs through Gesäuse National Park, founded in 2002. In the morning comes Bad Aussee, a spa town in the Styrian Salzkammergut, and at midday Hallstatt, in a cultural landscape listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, on the Schafberg, at 1,783 m, a cog railway opened in 1893 climbs to the summit.
