The album comes from the archive: a drive from Budapest to the Ligurian coast, through Croatia and over the Alps. The photos carry no dates and their coordinates are only approximate, so the story arranges them in route order, in eight stops. Many were processed in the HDR style of those years, with dramatic skies and boosted colors. Budapest opens the trip, with the Parliament, Hungary’s largest building. The banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter have been on the UNESCO list since 1987.
The road continues through Croatia, with a stop in Zagreb, the capital. Farther south, Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO site since 1979, has sixteen main lakes linked by travertine barriers and waterfalls. Then comes the Adriatic coast.
The route then crosses the mountains by the Stelvio Pass, at 2,757 m one of the highest paved passes in the Alps, known for the 48 hairpins on its side above Prato allo Stelvio.
Farther south, Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. Torbole lies on its northern shore, beside Monte Brione, and from there the road follows the shore south.
The last chapters are on the Italian Riviera: the Cinque Terre, five villages perched on cliffs, and Portovenere, a little to the southeast. Riomaggiore appears in the evening, with the coastal path cut into the cliff. The Cinque Terre, Portovenere and the nearby islands have been a UNESCO site since 1997.
