Mallorca in mid-October: a sea still blue, big autumn clouds and warm afternoon light. In the north of the island, the road runs from Can Picafort on the Bay of Alcúdia to the old town of Alcúdia, with its medieval walls, and on to Pollença. In the evening, it reaches the Formentor peninsula and the Mirador Es Colomer.

A sculpture on the rocks by the shore, waves and the water of the bay behind.
Alcúdia
A gate in the walls, seen from both sides, with palm trees and ivy.
Pollença
The town spread out in the valley, between wooded hills and the mountains of the north of the island.
Mirador Es Colomer
Cliffs dropping into the sea, the rocky islet in front of them and the ridge of the peninsula under a pink sky at dusk.
On the east coast, with its small coves, the road passes Cala Marçal, near Portocolom, and Porto Cristo.
Portocolom
Turquoise water and a small beach between low rocks and pines, then, at dawn, the sun rising out of the sea above the coast.
Porto Cristo
A sheltered inlet with clear water, a beach and white houses along the shore.
The Serra de Tramuntana is the range of limestone mountains that follows the northwest coast, a UNESCO cultural landscape since 2011. The road to Sa Calobra crosses it and winds down in hairpin bends to the sea. Next to the cove, the Torrent de Pareis opens its gorge onto the shore.
Sa Calobra
The road between the rocks, clear water with anchored boats between limestone walls and the white pebble beach between the sheer walls of the gorge.
Near Campos, the Salines d'Es Trenc. On the hill above Palma, Bellver Castle was built in the 14th century on a circular plan, rare in Europe. Construction of the Gothic cathedral, La Seu, began in the 13th century, after the conquest of the island by James I of Aragon, and in the early 20th century Antoni Gaudí worked on the renovation of its interior. Then the road runs the length of the Formentor peninsula to its end.

Palma de Mallorca

Cape Formentor
The road climbing and dipping along the ridge, lined with stone walls, the cliffs against the light at sunset, the white lighthouse and the turquoise water of Cala Figuera.
The road heads down to the south coast of the island, at Badia Blava, near Llucmajor.
