Lake Skadar, the Bay of Kotor, Sveti Stefan · Aug 2023 · 28 photos
In August 2023, a week on the coast of Montenegro, with one day across the border in Croatia. Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, is shared by Montenegro and Albania, and its Montenegrin side is a national park. The lake appears in the evening at Vranjina, and again from a boat under a clear summer sky.
Lake Skadar
Still water in the evening light, with the limestone mountains mirrored in it, then reed beds and wide fields of water lilies, with the karst hills behind.
The Bay of Kotor, seen first from the hills at Radanovići, then from above Kotor. In the afternoon comes the old town at the foot of the mountain. Kotor and its bay have been on the UNESCO list since 1979.
Radanovići
The plain around Tivat, with villages and patches of woodland, and behind it the waters of the bay and the mountains on the far shore, under summer clouds.
Kotor
A cruise ship anchored off the town between the mountains, then the walls and their round bastion mirrored in the green water.
In the evening, farther down the coast, Sveti Stefan: a former fortified fishing village on an islet tied to the shore by a narrow isthmus, turned into a hotel in the second half of the 20th century.
Sveti Stefan
Reddish pebble beaches with folded umbrellas in the evening sun, then the clouds colored above the island after sunset.
The Verige Strait is the narrowest part of the Bay of Kotor, crossed by the ferry between Lepetane and Kamenari. In the afternoon the coast road leads across the border to Dubrovnik, in Croatia. Its walls, almost 2 km long, ring the old town, a UNESCO site since 1979.

Red-roofed houses along the shore, seen from the water, and wooded slopes running down to the coast.
Dubrovnik
The old town from above, the island of Lokrum offshore, kayaks below Fort Bokar, the old port, the walls and Lovrijenac on its rock, in the evening light.
Farther down the coast, the road climbs into the hills above Petrovac. Finally, the road turns inland, back to the lake.
Petrovac
Wooded, rocky hills running down to small coves, with the open sea in the distance.
